Pneumatic Soundscapes
Ilmārs Šterns, concept / voice / performance
Katharina Klement, concept / piano & electronics / performance
Drawing on the Aristotelian definition of “pneuma”—that vital breath which transforms the impulses of the soul into physical movement—Ilmārs Šterns and Katharina Klement develop their collaborative work.
In a performance lasting approximately 50 minutes, they explore how the invisible power of the breath takes on a wide variety of forms and how rich its sonic repertoire is. In several sequences, different interrelationships between the human-organic and the technological-mechanical systems are playfully explored. The performers interact with fans and a balloon-like plastic membrane, connecting their bodies, sounds, and a grand piano into a shared symbiotic cycle.
Ultimately, “Pneumatic Soundscapes” unfolds as a sonic and choreographic dialogue that opens up a shared space for interaction between the two artists.
